DESCRIPTION OF SITE

The site is located at SW865669 along the bottom of a steep-sided valley between Mawgan Porth to the West and St. Mawgan to the East. The site is a long and relatively flat area of Great Grey Willow and Bramble, Scrub, Marshy areas dominated by Hamlock water-Dropwort-Herb, The boundary along the northern side of the survey area is a fast flowing River, across the River Glurian, but not a part of our site, is an area of native broad-leaved woodland. The southern boundary is a native species of rich Cornish hedge and earth bank and separates the site from the road that leads to Retorrick Mill. The east and West boundaries are short sections of native species- rich Cornish hedge. There is a bridle path at each end along the River. The banks are raised or slightly raised in places and therefore support species requiring drier or more freely draining conditions. Typical species of drier woodland occur here and these include Sanicle (Sanicula europaea), Common Violet ( Viola Riviniana ), Slender False-Brome ( Brachypodium), Lords- and Ladies ( Arum Maculataum), Wood-Sage ( Teucrium Scorodonia) and Bluebell ( Hyacinthoides non- Scripta), One plant of Royal Fern ( Osmunda regalis ) grows on the Riverbank. This fern is rather uncommon in Britain ( Perring and Walters 1990) but is more frequent in Cornwall. There is also Yellow Iris ( Iris pseudacorus) and Meadowsweet ( Filipendudula ulmaria).Truely outstanding.
